Topic-Specific CE Requirements

There are various topic-specific CE requirements you must complete within your renewal cycle if you sell annuities, flood insurance or long-term care insurance.

Since it can be hard to keep them all straight, we've listed these topic-specific CE requirements in the chart below. You'll also find information on the ethics training requirement, which applies to all agents.

All Agents

  • Required to complete 24 hours of CE per renewal cycle

  • Of the 24 hours, three must be ethics-specific

  • Licenses must be proactively renewed by submitting a renewal application by the last day of your birth month

Ethics Required for All Agents

  • Ongoing three-hour requirement per renewal cycle
  • Must be ODI approved

As part of the licensing changes passed in House Bill 300, all agents are required to complete three hours of ethics training each renewal cycle.

In order for courses to count toward your ethics training requirement, they must be approved by ODI under an ethics category. It is important to note that just because a course has an ethics component to the outline does not mean that it will count toward your ethics requirement. PIA's lineup of ethics seminars is approved by ODI and satisfies the new requirement.

Agents Selling Annuities

  • One-time, four-hour requirement
  • If you held a life insurance or variable annuity line of authority on or before July 1, 2011 and sell annuities: complete by Jan. 1, 2012
  • If you obtain a life insurance or variable annuity line of authority after July 1, 2011 and will sell annuities: complete before any annuity sales take place
  • See Bulletin 2011-7

The Ohio Department of Insurance (ODI) has added a one-time, annuity-specific four-hour CE training requirement for insurance agents who engage in the sale, solicitation or negotiation of annuity products. If you have held a life insurance or variable annuity line of authority on or before July 1, 2011 and sell annuities, you will need to complete the CE requirement by Jan. 1, 2012. If you obtain a life insurance or variable annuity line of authority after July 1, 2011 and will sell annuities, you will need to complete the CE requirement before any annuity sales take place.

The annuity CE course may be taken in another state with laws substantially similar to Ohio's, however, if you want the course to count toward your 24 hours of required Ohio CE, you must take a class approved by ODI. In addition to the new four-hour CE requirement for agents, companies are required to provide product-specific training on annuities for their agents by July 1, 2011. Companies are responsible for monitoring agent compliance with these trainings. The training requirements are explained in Bulletin 2011-7.

Agents Selling Flood Insurance

  • One-time, three-hour requirement
  • Must be NFIP approved
  • See Bulletin 2007-1
