There are various topic-specific CE requirements you must complete within your renewal cycle if you sell annuities, flood insurance or long-term care insurance.
All independent agents are required to complete 24 hours of CE per renewal cycle, of which three must be ethics-specific and must have their licenses renewed by submitting a renewal application by the last day of your birth month.
As part of the licensing changes passed in House Bill 300, all agents are required to complete three hours of ethics training each renewal cycle. In order for courses to count toward your ethics training requirement, they must be approved by ODI under an ethics category.
The Ohio Department of Insurance (ODI) added a one-time, annuity-specific four-hour CE training requirement for insurance agents who engage in the sale, solicitation or negotiation of annuity products. Companies are required to provide product-specific training on annuities for their agents. The training requirements are explained in Bulletin 2011-7.
Agents licensed in property and casualty or personal lines of authority who sell flood insurance must complete a one-time, NFIP-approved flood insurance course which will provide at least three hours of continuing education credit. The training requirements are explained in Bulletin 2007-1.
Ohio insurance agents are prohibited from selling long-term care insurance unless they are authorized for accident and health or life, and have completed a one-time, eight-hour training course. In addition, agents are required to complete four hours of ongoing training each renewal cycle. The training requirements are explained in Bulletin 2008-2.
