Representing the Interests of Independent Agents

OIA is dedicated to building strong relationships with legislators and key state agencies to promote, protect and progress a healthy business environment for independent agents.

Here is a look at our Legislative Priorities for 2023.

Advocacy Reach

OIA has a full-time staff dedicated to building strong relationships with legislators, members of the Ohio General Assembly, the Ohio Department of Insurance and other important state agencies. We advocate on behalf of our members for policies and candidates that improve the insurance marketplace in Ohio.

OIA PAC

Our voluntary, non-partisan political action committee invests time and resources that support legislative and judicial candidates. Our PAC works to ensure a positive marketplace for independent agents in the state.

A Proven Track Record

OIA members regularly meet with lawmakers and testify on priority legislation. We are actively engaged in a variety of events, such as OIA Advocacy Day at the Ohio Statehouse and the Big “I” Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C.

These collective efforts have made a difference:

Ensured that smaller agencies are exempt from burdensome cybersecurity requirements

Defeated attempts to expand the state sales tax over agent commissions

Championed a law to ensure certificates of insurance will be used for their intended purpose

Spearheaded a law to allow BWC to provide other states workers’ comp coverage

Changed the law to allow agents to carry over excess CE hours

Clarified agent appointment requirements

Developed a fairer process for BWC claims

Established ride-sharing insurance coverage requirements for TNCs like Uber
