Regulatory Issues and Comments

ODI Comments and Testimonials

The OIA regularly weighs in on important rule changes and regulation changes within the Ohio Department of Insurance (ODI). OIA and our advocacy team regularly provide comments and testimonials on issues that affect Independent Agents. Read about some of the issues we supported below.

Amendment to Rule 3901-5-09 (L) – License Reactivation Rule (2024)

OIA voiced support for this Amendment, which would eliminate the requirement that an inactive license stays dormant for two years before it can be reactivated. This rule deters agents and agencies from hiring talent who may take a break or deviate from their careers.

Proposed Rule 3901-5-03 – CE Rules (2023)

OIA supported ODI’s review of the continuing education rules, specifically the additional guidelines for distance learning courses. We believe Ohio’s continuing education laws and rules reflect the high standards and quality of education that we have come to know and expect from insurance agents.

Rule 3901-1-57 – Agent Appointment Fees (2022)

OIA strongly supported the proposed changes to Rule 3901-1-57. We believe the proposed 33% agent appointment fee reduction will continue to position Ohio as a consumer-friendly and competitive insurance marketplace. We commend Director Judi French for her leadership and the Ohio Department of Insurance (ODI) for proactively coming forward with a reduction in fees and government spending.
